Selecting an adoption agency and navigating the maze of adoption regulations can be a daunting task. To assist employees, the Office of Work, Life and Engagement is assembling a network of adoptive parents at Johns Hopkins who are interested in discussing their experiences with employees considering adoption. Contact the LifeSpan Services Manager for more information.
The University provides adoption assistance to eligible employees. Full-time faculty and staff with at least two consecutive years of full-time JHU service immediately prior to the initiation of the adoption process are eligible to participate in this program.
The Maryland Department of Human Resources provides general guidance on adoption and a list of private adoption agencies in Maryland.
Breastfeeding Support Program
Having a baby is a major life transition. Continuing to breastfeed after you return to work adds a daily activity that needs to fit into your work day and environment. The Johns Hopkins Breastfeeding Support Program is here to help make the transition easier so that you can breastfeed for as long as it is the best choice for you and your baby.

Car Seat Assistance
The Johns Hopkins Children's Safety Center offers several plans for low income parents to obtain car seats. Maryland law requires that all children under eight years and weighing less than 65 pounds (the child must achieve both) have to be in a car seat while in an automobile.
Installation and Inspection
Studies show that 90 percent of car seats are used incorrectly. Certified child passenger safety technicians at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Safety Center can ensure that your child’s seat is installed properly. This service is free for families who receive Medical Assistance, WIC or have other documented needs; the cost is $10 for all other families.
Rent or Buy a Car Seat
The Johns Hopkins Children’s Safety Center also offers reduced-cost car seats for purchase and infant car seats for one year loan. Parents must meet income eligibility criteria.
