Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible to attend the Johns Hopkins Baby Shower?

All JHU/JHH full-time and part-time faculty and staff are eligible to attend the Johns Hopkins Baby Shower free of charge as part of your employee benefits package. Unfortunately, residents, postdocs, and graduate students are not eligible to attend at this time.

Do I have to attend the entire event?

While it is not required for you to attend the entire event, it is strongly encouraged. The event is composed of five presentations and one break-out session. Before, during, and after the presentations, you can speak with vendors such as the Maryland Family Network to discuss child care referrals and EHP to discuss health insurance. If you must leave the event early or arrive late, you will receive handouts from all of the presentations.

Can I bring a guest?

Guests are welcomed and encouraged to attend. If you would like to bring a guest, please include your guest’s name on the registration form to ensure we have an accurate count for materials and seating.

I didn’t register to bring a guest. May I bring one anyway?

Yes, however we ask that you email worklife@jhu.edu to let us know that you have decided to bring a guest to the Baby Shower. Please include your guest’s name.

Can I bring my child to the Baby Shower?

We ask that you do not bring your child to the Baby Shower. We can assist you in utilizing the Johns Hopkins Backup Care program if you need child care during the event. If you are interested in registering for backup care or would like additional information, please contact us at worklife@jhu.edu or 443-997-7000.

I am coming to the Baby Shower from another campus. Where should I park?

Everyone that registers for the Baby Shower and indicates that they will need parking for the event will receive an email with specific parking instructions. Parking vouchers will be provided based on availability.

The registration form asks if I will need a child care referral. What is the child care referral process?

We partner with the Maryland Family Network LOCATE Child Care Services for child care referrals. The Maryland Family Network maintains a database for all licensed child care facilities within the state of Maryland. A LOCATE referral specialist will help determine your child care needs and provide referrals to only those child care programs that have immediate vacancies. To start the referral process, email worklife@jhu.edu the following information:

  1. Name
  2. Home address
  3. Preferred phone number
  4. Preferred email address
  5. Estimated date you will need care to begin

Your information will be forwarded to Maryland Family Network, and they will contact you within three days of receiving your information.

A representative from Maryland Family Network will attend the Baby Shower. You are welcome to speak with the representative and start the referral process at that time.

How do I handle maternity leave? What do I need to know about adding my child to my benefits package?

There will be a Benefits representative from JHU and from JHH/JHHS at the Baby Shower who will discuss employee benefits related to the addition of a new baby to your family. If you have specific questions about your benefits, you will be able to speak with the Benefits representative after his or her presentation.

I attended a baby shower in the past, can I attend again?

You are welcome to attend again; however, a majority of the information will be similar to previous baby showers.
